8 DIE IN QUAKE NEAR REMOTE PAKISTAN VILLAGE.

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 shook western Pakistan early today, killing at least eight people and injuring more than two dozen, hospital officials said.

 in Golden, Colo., the quake was centered 70 miles east-southeast of Quetta, the capital of Pakistan's least populated province, Baluchistan.

Residents and hospital officials in Quetta, about 400 miles southwest of Islamabad, said frightened residents ran from their homes. Many remained outside in the bitter cold for several hours, afraid to return.

About 200,000 people live in Quetta, most of them in homes made of sun-dried mud. The dead and wounded lived in the remote outskirts of the city.

Officials at the only large hospital in Quetta expected the casualty rate to rise when victims from more remote regions of the province were brought into the city.

The quake occurred at 2:08 a.m. local time (1:08 p.m. Thursday PST PST Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, see there ), and was followed by a magnitude-6.3 aftershock af·ter·shock
