About 75 of the 400 doctors on staff at Community Memorial Hospital have cast a no-confidence vote against the board of directors in a dispute over how the private hospital is run.

The doctors object to a new policy that forbids physicians who compete with the 240-bed hospital for patients from holding leadership positions. They also argue that the management should not be able to contract with new doctors without their input.

``In 30 years, there have been a handful of instances where medical staff has voted no-confidence in an administration,'' said Curtis Bond, an attorney who represents the physicians. ``But this is the first time that I can recall that medical staff has voted no confidence in the leadership of the board.''

and its 16-member board, said the no-confidence vote was not surprising, given the ongoing dispute. The vote, he noted, represented a minority of doctors.

Last week's no-confidence vote is another move in a heated dispute that has sparked a lawsuit lawsuit: see procedure; tort.  by doctors against the hospital. The suit, which claims that management has interfered with patient care decisions, has won backing by the American Medical Association American Medical Association (AMA), professional physicians' organization (founded 1847). While the lawsuit is pending, a judge has ordered that a doctor who lost his medical privileges have his contract reinstated. But he also ordered the doctor to sign the conflict-of-interest agreement until he rules on its legality le·gal·i·ty
