While a final decision has not yet been made on the California assembly line, the experimental train trip is being conducted to make sure the 125-foot-long 737-900 fuselage isn't too big for the route and to determine how long the journey will take.

Boeing officials are hoping the ``simulated rail-car transfers,'' which will be made in the next few weeks, will help them decide whether it makes good business sense to create a new production line to build certain 737 models at its Douglas Products Division.

Because it's a new model, another fuselage mock-up - a wooden shell of the aircraft's body section - also will be sent by rail to Boeing's Renton, Wash., factory, where the 737 and 757 airplanes are currently built.

``We want to make sure everything goes smoothly,'' Boeing spokesman Sean O'Donnell Sean O'Donnell (born October 13, 1971 in Ottawa, Ontario) is a professional ice hockey defenceman who currently plays for the Anaheim Ducks of the NHL. Boeing also is preparing for the new line by clearing out an aircraft production bay now used to build MD-11 jets at the Long Beach factory. In addition, the company is upgrading the assembly area, installing electrical power supplies and appointing teams to head up 737 production work at the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Mitchell said a decision on the new assembly line will be made in mid-August.
