70 years of Sokolow.Anna Sokolow Anna Sokolow (born February 9, 1910, Hartford, Connecticut; died March 29, 2000 in New York City, New York) was an American dancer and choreographer. She began her dance training with Martha Graham and Louis Horst at the Neighborhood Playhouse. and Dance Unit performed their first program at New York's 92nd St. Y in 1936. Seventy years later, the relationship between the company and the uptown venue is still going strong, despite Sokolow's death in 2000. In December, 70 Years of Sokolow at the 92nd Street Y included works-in-progress by artistic director Jim May and guest choreographer cho·re·o·graph v. cho·re·o·graphed, cho·re·o·graph·ing, cho·re·o·graphs v.tr. 1. To create the choreography of: choreograph a ballet. 2. , Anabella Lenzu. The highlight was Sokolow's own 1936 solo, Ballade ballade (bəläd`), in literature, verse form developed in France in the 14th and 15th cent. The ballade usually contains three stanzas of eight lines with three rhymes and a four-line envoy (a short, concluding stanza). in a Popular Style, danced by Melissa Birnbaum (right). The audience was transported to 1930s NYC NYC abbr. New York City NYC New York City , when young women born of Russian Jewish immigrants could travel uptown and dance their hearts out.
