THE odds-compilers at Blue Square have come up with a dazzling array of special bets for 2009, many of them relating to their flagship event, the Blue Square Derby, writes Jonathan Kay.

Blue Square rate it a 3-1 chance that an Irish-trained runner emulates Loyal Honcho in landing the premier Classic, while it is 8-1 that there is a repeat of last year when Irish runners took both the Scottish and English Derbys.

Away from the Derby, the firm think the year-long Trainers' Championship will again boil down to a battle between perennial challengers Mark Wallis (4-6) and Charlie Lister (11-10), while a change from voluntary to compulsory status for the greyhound 'levy' is the biggest price offered at 66-1.
