7 A DAY .. number of Ulster marriages breaking down.

ALMOST seven marriages a day break down in Northern Ireland, it was revealed yesterday.

With 2,362 couples divorced during 2005, campaigners demanded better policies and more services to protect family life and the children involved.

Parents' Advice Centre chief executive Pip Jaffa said people need to be asking what mechanisms are being used to ensure children's voices are heard in the divorce process. She added: "We need to have services available to children too - to help them work through what is happening in their lives."

The figures show the impact of marriage legislation changes in 2004, which allow civil ceremonies outside a Registrar's Office.

Last year just under 650 couples got married in such a venue.

With last December's Civil Partnership Act giving same-sex couples legal recognition of their relationship, 12 such unions were registered.

A spokesman for NISRA said: "These figures illustrate continuing social change and the parallel changes in civil registration
