 total showed another substantial jump yesterday to 49,000.

Data due to be released today but published early showed unemployment for January to March up 7,000 on the previous quarter and 11,000 on the year.

The unemployment rate of 6.1 per cent was a full one per cent up on the previous period and 1.5 per cent up on the same time last year. However, the rate remains well below the 7.1 per cent UK average and was, in fact, fifth lowest of the regions.
