64-Mbit Flash Memory Chip from STMicroelectronics Increases Density in Standard Applications.

Business Editors

GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 21, 2002

STMicroelectronics (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
:STM (Scanning Tunneling Microscope) A microscope that can image down to the atomic level. An STM uses a piezoelectric tube with a tiny sharp tip at the end that is moved within nanometers of the object being sampled. ) today announced the M28W640C, a high density standard Flash memory chip organized as 4-Mbitsx16-bits and operating at 3V.

The new device has been manufactured in 0.15-micron technology and is well suited for consumer applications such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A handheld computer for managing contacts, appointments and tasks. It typically includes a name and address database, calendar, to-do list and note taker, which are the functions in a personal information manager (see PIM). ), digital still cameras, High Definition TV (HDTV (High Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards that offer the highest resolution and sharpest picture. Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates ) and cellular phones.

The M28W640C is fully compatible with the lower density devices of the same family, the 16-Mbit M28W160 and the 32-Mbit M28W320. The device features an individual block-locking scheme that allows any block to be locked or unlocked with no latency, enabling instantaneous code and data protection. Each block can sustain over 100,000 program/erase cycles and can be read, programmed or erased over a power-supply voltage range of 2.7V to 3.6V, operating at temperatures of -40 to +85(degree)C.

For increased data security, the M28W640C includes a 192-bit protection register and protection block. The register is divided into two segments: a 64-bit segment containing a unique device programmed by ST and a 128-bit segment which is one-time-programmable by the user. The security block, parameter block 0, can be permanently protected by the user.

The M28W640C conforms to the Common Flash Interface standard and JEDEC The division of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) that deals with semiconductor standards (officially, the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association of EIA). JEDEC was formed in 1958 when the Joint Electron Tube Engineering Council (JETEC) split into two Joint Electron Device  command set, a data structure that enables system software to identify electrical and timing parameters and density information within the device.

The M28W640C is available in 80ns (3.0V to 3.6V) and 90ns (2.7V to 3.6V) access times and comes in TFBGA TFBGA Thin & Fine-Pitch Ball Grid Array
TFBGA Thin Fine Pitch Ball Grid Array
48 (8x6 ball array) and TSOP48 (12x20mm) packages. Samples are available now with volume production in Q2, 2002.
