62nd Annual ABCA convention at the World Center Marriott, Orlando, Florida, January 4-7, 2007.

Message from the President

Like everyone else in the ABCA ABCA American Baseball Coaches Association
ABCA American Border Collie Association
ABCA Associação Brasileira de Críticos de Arte
ABCA Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority
ABCA American, British, Canadian, and Australian
, I am looking forward to our 62nd Annual Convention, January 4-7, at the Orlando (FL) World Center Marriott.

We are all making it a MUST STOP on our jump-start to the upcoming season. There is no better way to expand our horizons by meeting old friends and making new ones--deriving fresh ideas from the clinics and more than 300 exhibitors, and having input in your divisional meeting.

Where else can you get all of this in just four short days while having fun?

The Convention will begin on Thursday evening with business meetings for all of the divisions in the ABCA: NCAA NCAA
abbr.
National Collegiate Athletic Association
, NAIA NAIA
abbr.
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes
, Junior College, High School, and Youth. These meetings will enable you to participate in the decision-making or the pertinent issues for each level and allow you to become actively involved. Take a pro-active stance in your division and make a difference.

As usual, you can expect an outstanding group of clinicians to challenge you to be a better teacher and coach in your upcoming season. Second Vice-President Steve Smith from Baylor University Baylor University, mainly at Waco, Tex.; coeducational; chartered and opened 1845 by Baptists (see Baylor, Robert E. B.) at Independence, moved 1886 and absorbed Waco Univ. (chartered 1861). The library has a noted Robert Browning collection.  has put together a great lineup of professional, college, and high school coaches who will help us become better instructors. Besides the clinic sessions, over 280 exhibitors will display the latest baseball equipment.

The four days will also provide us an opportunity to honor the men and women who have made significant contributions to our great game at both the Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet and the Honors Luncheon. These moments are very important for our honorees, so let's be sure we are there to enjoy it with them. The spouses' reception and breakfast are always highlights of the convention that make it special for our key assistant coaches--our wives.

Our Chairman of the Board, Dr. Glen Tuckett, Executive Director Dave Keilitz, and his staff--Betty Rulong, Nick Phillips Nick Phillips (born May 10, 1974) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm offbreak bowler. He played first-class cricket between 1993 and 2003 for Sussex and Durham in a career that lasted ten years.  and Juahn Clark--will make your ABCA experience a memorable one for you, your family, and coaching staff. So, join us and enjoy the sun, the fun, your friends, and our game--Baseball.

See you in Orlando!

Meet the Next President

Kent Shelley

In 19 seasons as head baseball coach at Johnson County Community College Johnson County Community College (often referred to as JCCC) is located in Overland Park, Kansas. It was founded in 1972 due to great demand in the area for a community college, and to accommodate the rapidy growing population of Johnson County, Kansas. , Kent Shelley has earned a reputation for consistently fielding teams that play solid fundamental baseball. His teams are built around speed, an aggressive offense, and stingy stin·gy

Testament to that philosophy is apparent in the fact that JCCC JCCC Johnson County Community College (Kansas)

JCCC Joint Combat Camera Center
JCCC Joint Communications Control Center
has been one of the country's top-hitting clubs five times and has had several players finish among the national leaders (NJCAA NJCAA National Junior College Athletic Association ) in stolen bases.

As the winningest coach in JCCC history, Shelley has amassed an impressive 525-355-1 mark (.656), leading four teams to Eastern Sub-regional championships and two squads to NJCAA Region VI titles. In 2005, Shelley won his 500th game as JCCC's head coach, and became JCCC's all-time wins leader, surpassing JCCC Hall of Famer Sonny Maynard.

Successful seasons have not been unusual for Shelley. In his 19 seasons as a college head coach, he has produced nine teams that have won at least 30 games and racked up at least 20 wins in 18 of his 19 years as coach. He has guided the Cavaliers to post-season play in 18 seasons.

Shelley's players have also achieved huge success. He has coached three NJCAA All-American, five USA Junior College All-Stars, nine All-Region VI performers, 65 All-East Jayhawk Conference recipients, and 12 NJCAA Academic All-Americans--nine in the last five years.

To date, 20 of his former Cavalier players have been drafted or signed as free agents by the major leagues. Since K.S. took over the reins in 1987, pitcher Travis Buckley became the first player put on the 40-man roster of the 1993 expansion Colorado Rockies For the National Hockey League team (1976 – 1982), now known as the New Jersey Devils, see .

In 2004, Pellow was the opening-day left fielder for the Colorado Rockies.

While developing professional talent is impressive, Shelley is quick to point out the number of former players who have continued their playing and education at four-year universities and colleges. A total of 135 student-athletes under his direction have transferred to four-year institutions, 109 at the NCAA Division I or II level.

Shelley's success at JCCC has earned him national recognition.

In the summer of 1994, Shelley served as head coach of the NJCAA All-Stars, a select NJCAA team from the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. , Cuba.

Shelley was also selected as head coach of the Kansas Region VI Eastern Division All-Stars three times, and won the first Louisville Slugger/Region VI coach of the year honor after his team captured the 1993 Region VI title.

Shelley's influence on junior college baseball College baseball is baseball as played on the intercollegiate level at institutions of higher education, predominantly in the United States. Compared to American football and basketball in the United States, college competition plays a less significant contribution to cultivating  may be considered much greater than the many successes his teams have enjoyed on the field. He has been active on both the national and international levels of junior college baseball. He has also represented the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Association on the ABCA Executive Committee and served on the International Baseball Committee for that organization.

In 2002, Shelley became just the second community college coach to serve on the ABCA's Executive Committee.

In addition to his coaching duties at JCCC, Shelley serves as a professor in the physical education department and is an associate scout for the Kansas City Royals.

Shelley earned his bachelor's degree in personnel administration at Kansas University and completed his master's degree master's degree
