Besides running six miles, bicycling 15 miles in the mountains and kayaking for an hour, the teams of three had to follow a map, use a compass, assemble a puzzle and solve some mystery tests.

``Our whole goal is to get them out of the serious mode,'' said Michael Epstein, event director. ``We want them to have fun.''

Athletes were expected to keep their sense of humor Noun 1. sense of humor - the trait of appreciating (and being able to express) the humorous; "she didn't appreciate my humor"; "you can't survive in the army without a sense of humor"

while they rappelled 30 feet down an embankment during their run, swam 150 yards to their kayaks and back, balanced on beams over a mud pit, and pulled heavy planks 75 feet to the finish line.

``It's great,'' claimed David Kane, 27, of Menlo Park Menlo Park.

``Our strategy has been all messed up,'' said Kane as he waited for his teammates. ``I guess you never know what to expect.''

The series began in July in Hartford, Conn., and continued to Miami and then Pittsburgh before moving on to Castaic. The series has been taped for an ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network 2 special that will air at 1 p.m. Nov. 26 and 7:30 a.m. Dec. 6. The competition next year will be expanded to 10 sites in three nations, including Canada and Spain, sponsors said.

``The event is a brand new sport that's never been seen before,'' said spokeswoman Lori Hall. She said the competition in Castaic attracted participants from more than a dozen states and sold out two months in advance. ``People think they are creating it.''
