The local authority need to shave five per cent off their budget in the next financial year to make a total saving of pounds 16.9million. A 90-day consultation with the trade unions "on ways of minimising the impact of job cuts" is under way. It is not clear which posts would be lost, but up to 600 of the council's 11,000 workers could face redundancy. Blaming the "very difficult economic climate", chief executive Sue Bruce added: "We are committed to working closely with our staff and the trade unions to minimise the impact of job reductions."
