OXFAM pleaded yesterday for rich countries to help the 6.4 million Ethiopians on the brink of starvation starvation, condition in which deprivation of food has forced the body to feed on itself. Causes are famine, fasting, malnutrition, or abnormalities of the mucosal lining of the digestive system. .

Oxfam country director Waleed Rauf said: "Compared with the funds going to shore up the global financial system, money that could save lives here is a drop in the ocean."
