How's this for fast-tracking it? In the past year, Kaylee Chiang has gone from playing her violin in front of supermarkets for donations to receiving a standing ovation at Carnegie Hall Carnegie Hall

They averaged 9 years of age - mostly third-graders.

"You could actually hear the audience gasp when these little guys walked out on the stage," says Susan Pascale, founder and director of the 38-member children's orchestra.

When the gasps died down, the kids picked up their instruments and played works by Bach, Pachebel, Del Borgo and other great composers.

In the audience, Kaylee's mom, Tracy, was smiling through her tears. The little girl in the first row playing her heart out on the biggest performance stage in the world had been born three months early.

She weighed 2 pounds and was 13 inches long. She spent her first 72 days in an incubator incubator, apparatus for the maintenance of controlled conditions in which eggs can be hatched artificially. Incubator houses with double walls of mud, a fireroom, and several compartments each holding about 6,000 hens' eggs were developed in ancient times; the  at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center is a hospital in Burbank, California, USA. Six years later, the kid's playing Carnegie Hall. Beautiful.

"I used to sit there in the hospital day after day just listening to her heart monitor - scared to death for my little peanut, and waiting for the day I could take her home," Tracy says.

"When she finally came home, I didn't sleep for a long time. I sat up all night listening to her breath. I could tell she was getting stronger."

When Kaylee was 4, Tracy began taking violin lessons with her daughter.

"It soon became obvious she was the one with the talent," she said, laughing.

It was that talent that got her daughter accepted at 5 years old to join the South Pasadena Youth Orchestra and begin mastering the works of the world's greatest composers.

"You could see her potential," Pascale said. "In one year, from age 5 to 6, she made tremendous headway. It's all about practice and working hard. There's no limit to how far the talent of these kids will take them."

She wasn't nervous up there on stage at Carnegie Hall, Kaylee says. It was just another performance in another theater in front of a lot of people.

"No, I wasn't nervous at all," she said Friday, sitting down to another two hours of practice on her violin after school and before dinner.

If there were any nerves with this talented group of child musicians, they had come out well before Carnegie Hall.

The toughest gig they had to play was in front of supermarkets on weekends to help raise the $5,000 it cost each family to make the trip.

"There were usually six or seven kids at one supermarket. They'd open an empty violin case and put it in front of them. Then, they'd begin to play," Tracy said.

"The biggest compliment was when people stopped pushing their shopping carts, and just sat down and listened."

After a few minutes, they'd drop a $5 or $10 in the violin case and walk to their cars shaking their heads.

"You could tell by the looks on their faces they couldn't quite believe what they were hearing."

From 72 days in an incubator to Carnegie Hall in six years. Beautiful.
