6 CANDIDATES VYING FOR 3 OF 5 SEATS ON LA CANADA COUNCIL.

Polls open at 7 a.m. today in the election for three of the five seats on the La Canada Canada (kăn`ədə), independent nation (2001 pop. 30,007,094), 3,851,787 sq mi (9,976,128 sq km), N North America. Canada occupies all of North America N of the United States (and E of Alaska) except for Greenland and the French islands of  Flintridge City Council.

A total of six candidates are in the race, including incumbents Deborah Deborah (dĕb`ōrə), in the Bible, prophetess and judge of Israel, the only woman to hold that office. Under her guidance Barak conquered Sisera and delivered Israel from the oppression of the Canaanite King Jabin.  K. Orlik and James T. Edwards and challengers Warren C. Jacob Jacob (jā`kəb), in the Bible, ancestor of the Hebrews, the younger of Isaac and Rebecca's twin sons; the older was Esau. In exchange for a bowl of lentil soup, Jacob obtained Esau's birthright and, with his mother's help, received the blessing , Jerry G. Martin, Jack Orr and Anthony Portantino.

The polls close at 8 p.m.

Edwards has been on panel since 1990. Orlik joined the council last year after voters picked her over Portantino in a special election. Portantino lost by two votes.

The campaign this year has focused largely on issues related to business growth. Residents have been concerned in recent years about the Sport Chalet Sport Chalet is a retailer of sporting equipment, apparel, shoes, and accessories in the United States.

 development, a proposed 12-acre mall for the town center. The council has approved permits for the project but will weigh in again later this year when developers seek approval of siting and grading plans.

Edwards, an insurance broker, acknowledges he's considered part of the City Council's ``old guard'' and wants to see a balance of business and residential growth in the city.

Orlik, a lawyer, entered local politics as a Sport Chalet foe and an opponent of mansionization, the practice of building large homes on small lots. Portantino is a television and film writer and producer who says he wants to help forge forge

Jacob, a business lawyer, said he's tired of all the warring over Sport Chalet and wants to see the council focus on the health and safety of the community instead.

Orr, a recently retired business lawyer, also sees the need for a balance between business and residential growth. Sport Chalet has garnered so much attention because it's the biggest project the city will ever see, he said.
