Unearthed has had three incarnations - they first visited each region of Australia where Triple J had a transmitter - 41 regions in all. , it was revealed yesterday. The remains, dating back to 4000BC, cover an area equivalent to two football pitches. They include buildings, a human burial site, bits of pots and flints. One of the most intriguing artefacts at the Early Neolithic site in Wooler, Northumberland is a carved stone ball, thought to be some kind of ritual object. The find was made during a routine archaeological investigation at Tarmac's Cheviot Quarry last June, but details were only revealed yesterday. English Heritage English Heritage is a non-departmental public body of the United Kingdom government (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) with a broad remit of managing the historic environment of England. It was set up under the terms of the National Heritage Act 1983. Prehistory prehistory, period of human evolution before writing was invented and records kept. It is followed by protohistory, the period for which we have some records but must still rely largely on archaeological evidence to expert Dr Jonathan Last described the find as "incredibly important".
