of Silverton established herself as a strong contender by throwing 128-3 at the Mid-Willamette League district meet.

JAVELIN - Thurston's Tauni Powell is the only 5A girl to exceed 140 feet this spring. She leads the state at 145-8 and demonstrated some consistency by throwing 143-4 to win a district title in less-than-ideal conditions.

SPRINTS

100 - There is a new superstar in the state, and her name is Kellie Schueler. The Summit freshman leads Class 5A in all three sprints and runs on the state-leading short relay. Alma Aguiar of Hermiston leads the challengers.

200 - Behind Schueler, there is a tightly bunched field that includes Andrea Bailey of The Dalles-Wahtonka, who was the state runner-up at 4A last year.

400 - More than two seconds behind Schueler on the list of state leaders is her top threat, Marshfield's Worthen, who cruised to a district title in 59.37 but has run 57.92 this spring.

MIDDLE DISTANCES

800 - Springfield's Kelly Egan doubled at the district meet, and this is her best chance for a state title. Running unchallenged, she took the MWL title in 2:27.61, but her season-best of 2:18.71 leads Class 5A.

1,500 - Hermiston's Jennifer Macias leads the state by nearly eight seconds. Should she falter, Egan will be among those hoping to capitalize To regard the cost of an improvement or other purchase as a capital asset for purposes of determining Income Tax liability. To calculate the net worth upon which an investment is based. To issue company stocks or bonds to finance an investment.  and take the state title.

3,000 - Sixth last year in Class 4A, Macias will be the favorite in this year's race in 5A. She and Ilsa Paulson of Sherwood have times far superior to others in the state.

HURDLES

100-METER HIGH HURDLES - Potter leads 5A by nearly a second. Several runners are bunched behind her, including Willamette's Sarah Martin Sarah Martin (1791 - October 15, 1843)was a British philanthropist. She was born at Great Yarmouth; and lived in nearby Caister. She earned her living by dressmaking, and devoted much of her time amongst criminals in the Tollhouse Gaol in Great Yarmouth. .

300-METER INTERMEDIATE HURDLES - Putting her 400 skills to use, Marshfield's Worthen began running this race this spring and leads Class 5A by more than a second. Three other runners have come in under 47 seconds, one of them being Thurston's Potter.

RELAYS

4x100 - With star freshman Schueler on board, Summit is the favorite, followed by Churchill, Corvallis and Hermiston.

4x400 - The team from Summit also leads the state in this event, but with a time posted by a group that included Shueler, who isn't entered here for the state meet. That might open the door for the likes of Hillsboro or Wilsonville to slip past.

TEAM OUTLOOK

If Schueler can win four events, Summit will be tough to beat. Along those same lines, multiple victories by Potter will help the chances of Thurston, as would a strong showing by Worthen for Marshfield. Hillsboro and Hermiston have well-rounded teams with athletes peppering the field, make them formidable challengers as well.

TRIPLE JUMP - Another field headed by Bartlett, whose 46-11 3/4 at districts was more than two feet farther than anyone else in Class 5A this spring. Among the challengers will be Marshfield's Caleb Kruse and Lebanon's Roosa.

HIGH JUMP - It would have been a triple for Bartlett at district, where he went 6-6, if not for Billy Butler of Hillsboro. Butler, who tied for second in Class 4A last year, jumped 7-2 to win district and leads Class 5A. Also entered: Zach Schilling of Springfield, Trustin Johnson of Churchill and Lebanon's Roosa.

THROWS

SHOT PUT - Wilsonville's Jesse Jesse (jĕs`ē), in the Bible, the descendant of Rahab, the grandson of Boaz and Ruth, and the father of David. Referring to the restoration of the Davidic monarchy, the Book of Isaiah speaks of a shoot coming from the "stump of Jesse.  Staub beat his previous season best by 16 1/4 inches (53-4 1/4 ) at districts to grab the top seed. Robert Atoe of The Dalles-Wahtonka is seeded second but has a throw of 54 feet this spring.

DISCUS - Corvallis junior Anthony Emmons posted the best mark in Class 5A with a throw of 160-4 at districts. Staub will also challenge for the title.

JAVELIN - Another event in which Staub is a strong contender, having earned the top seed with the best throw (183-1) at district. But Justin McKenzie has been consistently above 180 this spring and has the top mark in Class 5A - 188-5 - and Thurston's Brian Keebler is also in the mix.

SPRINTS

100 - An injury robs the field of Glencoe's Gabriel Aguilar, who leads 5A with a 10.80. Pendleton's Maurice Peterson, one of three others to come in under 11.00, is also absent after a DQ at district. Lebanon's Alex Bourne Bourne, town (1990 pop. 16,064), Barnstable co., SE Mass., crossed by Cape Cod Canal; settled 1627, inc. 1884. Bourne Bridge (1935), across the canal, made the town an entry point to Cape Cod and a resort and commercial center.  is No. 1, ahead of Springfield's Dusty Jarvis and North Eugene's Austin Christianson.

400 - Churchill's Shane O'Connell is the only runner in Class 5A to dip under 50 seconds this season. Ben Tofflemore of Liberty should be on his heels.

MIDDLE DISTANCES

800 - Hermiston's Alex Ringe has consistently been below 2 minutes this spring, and he posted the top qualifying time of 1:55.78. Lukas Fenley of Thurston could be an upset contender.

1,500 - The top qualifier qual·i·fi·er

3,000 - Crater senior Jake JAKE Jointly Administered Knowledge Environment  Keyser is a contender in the 1,500, but in the longer race he's the clear favorite, with the top three times in Class 5A this spring. Bassett qualified second.

a double as the only hurdler to come in under 15 seconds consistently this spring. Buckner of Liberty is the only other 5A runner to do so, with a 14.95 at district.

300-METER INTERMEDIATE HURDLES - Only three runners have run below 40 seconds, and they're the favorites here. All three, in fact, have gone under 39 - Lind, Andrew Hastings of Corvallis and Nic Barnes of St. Helens.

RELAYS

4x100 - Having missed out on the 100 and 200, Peterson can still grab a title as a member of the favored team from Pendleton. Summit, St. Helens and Glencoe will challenge.

4x400 - The quartet from Corvallis finished in 3:27.99 at district to qualify first, but Lebanon posted a time of 3:27.12 earlier this year. That team includes Bourne and Roosa, contenders in mutiple events.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Last year, Summit was third and St. Helens was fourth at the Class 4A meet, and they look like strong contenders now that they're in 5A. And if Bassett and the pole vaulters can all meet or exceed expectations, perhaps Marshfield can slide into the race.
