Commander's Vision

The vision of the command is to become the SDDC SDDC Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (formerly Military Traffic Management Command)

MOTCO MOTCO Military Ocean Terminal, Concord (Concord, CA) , formerly part of the Naval Weapons Station, Concord, is the primary West Coast common-user ammunition terminal and was formally transferred from the Navy to the Army Oct. l, 2008. The assignment of the 834th to the 596th serves to provide operational and training synergies between the East and West Coast ammo terminals while also lending professional installation management oversight to the fledgling Army installation, MOTCO.

Further, the 596th will assume global ammunition operations and distribution responsibilities from the SDDC G3 later in fiscal year 2009. This action will consolidate the planning and execution of surface ammunition movements via sealift sea·lift

Features of the 596th

MOTSU has served as the primary CONUS common-user ammunition terminal in support of forces deployed around the world since 1955. The vast majority of munitions shipped to Vietnam, Central Europe during the Cold War, Desert Storm, and more recently, Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have originated from MOTSU. In 1997, it assumed responsibility for Army and Air Force ammunition prepositioned afloat programs, supporting the cyclic maintenance and loading of ammunition aboard long-term chartered ammo vessels.

At MOTSU, safety is the cornerstone of all activities performed on the terminal, to include construction and repair projects. These projects must be viewed through the lens of explosive safety. To ensure explosive safety is observed at all times, the 596th has an Ammunition Surveillance Division with two Quality Assurance Specialists, Ammunition Safety and a team of ammunition surveillance inspectors.

Recent Missions and Accomplishments

In recent years, MOTSU has undergone significant infrastructure modernization to enhance ammunition container throughput, to include the current Center Wharf expansion project scheduled for completion in 2011. When complete, the wharf will provide the necessary platform for the installation of two new ship-to-shore container cranes, designed to speed container throughput several fold.

Over the past year, MOTSU personnel loaded and discharged a total of 38 vessels. More than 600,000 measurement tons of munitions were handled, including the transshipment of more than 13,000 containers, 1,373 of which were packed at MOTSU. The Army and Air Force Preposition preposition, in English, the part of speech embracing a small number of words used before nouns and pronouns to connect them to the preceding material, e.g., of, in, and about.  Programs accounted for 457,000 measurement tons.
