58 Severely Injured Soldiers to Learn to Ski at Disabled Sports USA's The Hartford Ski Spectacular.


Disabled Sports Disabled sports are sports played by persons with a disability, including physical and intellectual disabilities. As many of these based on existing sports modified to meet the needs of persons with a disability, they are sometimes referred to as adapted sports.  USA:

DS/USA continues their 38 year history of rebuilding the lives of disabled veterans, and will host 58 U.S. soldiers severely injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with 50 of their family members, to participate in the week-long event. These service members will attend as part of the year round Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project, conducted by the Wounded Warrior Project and DS/USA. For many, this will be their first time participating in sports since their injury. Some returning servicemen will instruct alongside members of the U.S. Paralympic Ski Team and the Fire Department of New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of

), who served during September 11th attacks On September 11, 2001, in the deadliest case of domestic Terrorism in the history of the United States, a group of 19 terrorists hijacked four U.S. airliners for use as missiles against targets in New York City and Washington, D.C. .

Together with the soldiers, disabled individuals of all ages from around the country will attend the Hartford Ski Spectacular. Throughout the week there will be learn-to-ski, learn-to-snowboard clinics and adaptive equipment Adaptive equipment are devices that are used to assist with completing activities of daily living.

Bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and feeding are self-care activities that are including in the spectrum of activities of daily living (ADLs).
 demonstrations provided by experienced adaptive sports organizations from around the globe. The event will conclude with elite level races and an intermediate level team race.

SPECIAL GUESTS:

--North Carolina-based Army National Guard Lieutenant, Ed Salau, lost his left leg but has reclaimed his job with the Navy. He is returning to learn to teach adaptive skiing.

--Colorado-based Army Sergeant, Carla Best, lost her left leg above the knee, when her vehicle was directly hit by an explosive device. Carla will ski for the first time since her injury.

--Virginia-based Army Captain, Daniel Glanz, lost his right arm in Afghanistan by a suicide bomber Noun 1. suicide bomber - a terrorist who blows himself up in order to kill or injure other people

 during his second combat tour.

--California-based Army Sergeant, Noberto Lara, who lost his right arm in Iraq, learned to ski last year and returns this year to teach adaptive skiing.
