57-year-old tourist dies in rock fall; ACCIDENT.

A TOURIST died yesterday after plunging more than 30ft off a mountain.

The 57-year-old, who was American, was with her husband on a visit to Skellig Michael Skellig Michael (from Sceilig Mhichíl in the Irish language, meaning Michael's rock), also known as Great Skellig, is a steep rocky island about 15 kilometres west of the coast of County Kerry, Ireland. It is the larger of the two Skellig Islands.  off the Co Kerry coast.

The woman sustained head injuries and it is believed she was on her way down when she lost her footing.

The Shannon-based Sikorsky rescue helicopter was called to the island, which is 12km off the tip of the Iveragh peninsula The Iveragh Peninsula / Uíbh Ráthach is located in County Kerry in the Republic of Ireland. It is the biggest peninsula of Southwestern Ireland. A mountain range, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, lies in the centre of the peninsula. .

A doctor and a nurse who were also visiting the island tried to help the woman, who was from Rochester in New York New York, state, United States

But she died on the island and her body was being brought back into Portmagee by the Valentia lifeboat yesterday.

The woman is the second person to be killed in a fall from the rock this year.

A 77-year-old American man died in May.
