Joe Morrone

Joe Morrone, longtime men's soccer coach at Connecticut and Middlebury College Middlebury College, at Middlebury, Vt.; coeducational; chartered and opened 1800. Morrone stepped from college directly into his coaching career, beginning at Middlebury (VT) College in 1958 and concluding 11 years later with a 64-21-11 record, highlighted by an undefeated season in 1965.

In 1969, Morrone moved to UConn, where over the next 28 seasons he amassed an enviable 358-178-53 record. In his 16 NCAA tournament NCAA Tournament can mean:

 appearances, he guided his teams to three semifinal appearances and a national championship in 1981. Morrone also guided UConn to three Big East conference crowns, had 25 of his players earn All-America recognition, and had 30 go on to professional careers. His total of 428 wins is fourth all-time among collegiate coaches.

In addition to his unquestioned success on the field, Morrone has worked tirelessly promoting his sport, including his UConn Soccer Sundays, the building of the school's soccer stadium, establishing UConn soccer on the stare's sports landscape, and serving as a model on the building and promotion of the college.

He also founded the Mansfield (CT) and Connecticut Junior Soccer Associations, served as president of both the NSCAA and NISOA NISOA National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association , and was named to the NISOA Hall of Fame in 1976.

His two-year NSCAA presidency (1986-87) was characterized by the rewriting of the organization's constitution. Other honors include an NSCAA Letter of Commendation in 1990, the Bill Jeffrey William Alexander (Bill) Jeffrey, born 28th February, 1948, is a British civil servant, currently Permanent Secretary for Defence in the UK.

Jeffrey was educated at Allan Glen's School, Glasgow, and Glasgow University. He joined the Home Office in 1971.

    Bill Holleman, one of the nation's most accomplished high school soccer coaches and athletic mentors was presented with the Honor Award on Jan. 18, 2002, at the NSCAA Awards Dinner held in conjunction with the NSCAA Convention.

     soccer at Shiloh H.S. in suburban Atlanta, GA, Holleman was the 60th recipient of the award. A past president of the NSCAA (1988-90), he was an NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 1989 and a three-time Regional Coach of the Year (1978, 1985 and 1989).

    A 1968 graduate of Campbell University, Holleman has guided his teams to six state championships in either North Carolina or Georgia. He also has coached a variety of club teams to state and regional championships in the U-12, U-14, U-16 and U-19 age groups directing his U-16 youth team to the U.S. Youth Soccer Niotis Cup, and directed highly successful soccer venues in Detroit for the 1994 World Cup and in Birmingham, AL, for the 1996 Olympic Games.

    BASIC FORMAT OF THE PROGRAM:

    * State Diploma: designed for newly-involved coaches of player 6-10 years of age;

    * Regional Diploma: for coaches involved with players 11-18 years of age;

    * National/Advanced National Diploma: directed toward a national constituency and residential in nature. Generally offered seven times between January and August each year. Advanced National require the NSCAA National Diploma of USSF "B" license:

    * Premier Diploma: by application only with limited enrollment NSCAA Advanced National and/or the USSF A'license is required. Offered once each summer and winter.

    * NSCAA Goalkeeping Institute: currently offered at three levels (I, II and III) to help coaches create an optimal learning environment for players of this specialized position.

    * Special Topic Courses: generally taught over a weekend and cover specific areas of the game including, but not limited to play in the defensive third, play in the middle third, play in the attacking third and zonal defending. Special courses may be requested through the NSCAA;

    * Symposiums: educational events which typically take place around soccer-related events (i.e., NCAA men's and women's soccer championship).
