540/680 MB 3.5" removable storage platform by NOMAI.AVRANCHES, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 1994--Nomai of Avranches, France announced today the introduction of a new removable cartridge storage platform - the MCD MCD Minor Civil Division MCD McDonalds (restaurant) Mcd Macedonian (linguistics) MCD Municipal Corporation of Delhi MCD Magnetic Circular Dichroism MCD Mad Cow Disease . The new drive and cartridges are the first to follow the new MCD (Magnetic Cartridge Drive) specifications. They will offer from 540 to 680 Megabytes of storage on a 3 1/2" cartridge. The basic specifications of the MCD platform are as follows: Drive: Size: 3 1/2" form factor in 1" height Capacity: 680 MB (model MCD-M) 540 MB (model MCD-I) Access time: 10 msec Transfer rate from the media: up to 8.5 MB per second Interface: SCSI SCSI in full Small Computer System Interface Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB. 2 and Extended IDE MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) The average time a component works without failure. It is the number of failures divided by the hours under observation. MTBF - Mean Time Between Failures : 150,000 hours Cartridge: Size: 3 1/2" form factor - "shirt pocket size" Shock tolerance: 50G MTBF: 250,000 hours Weight: 85 grams (3.1 oz) The product is targeted at heavy storage users that require the flexibility of a removable device and the performance of a high end hard disk drive. It is the perfect product for the Pre-Press and imaging industry, as well as for users of CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc. CD-ROM in full compact disc read-only memory Type of computer storage medium that is read optically (e.g., by a laser). that require fast data throughput performance. Marc Frouin, Nomai's CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. , commented, "The MCD format is a very exciting one - it will let users do things that they cannot do today, because it is very fast. We expect the street price to be $350 to $399 for the drive and just $59 for the cartridge within a few months of availability. The incremental cost will therefore be less than $0.10 per MB. "This product uses all the best technologies, such as a PRML (Partial Response Maximum Likelihood) A technique used to differentiate a valid signal from noise by measuring the rate of change at various intervals of the rising waveform. data channel and a DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive only servo - one of the models even uses MR heads. This will make it the benchmark for performance and reliability in the removable storage world. "We expect product shipments to start in Q1-1995 and the first manufacturer is going to be IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) in its Havant (UK) manufacturing plant - so users need have no concerns over quality, since it will be there from day one, and volumes clearly will not be an issue." Nomai has done its development of a drive that complies with the MCD specification with a group of European and American partners from the computer storage industry, and has been supported by the European Union Government in that effort. Nomai, who expects to be the first of a number of companies to support the MCD format, is a manufacturer of removable storage products, and currently sells hard disk cartridges for the installed base of Syquest drives.
