Traffic fatalities in Ventura County rose to a 10-year high in 2000, jumping 46 percent over the previous year, authorities said Tuesday.

While CHP officials say the rise is significant - and alarming - there was no single cause for the increase.

In Oxnard, fatalities jumped from eight in 1999 to 11 last year; Ventura went from five in 1999 to six; and Camarillo reported two in both 1999 and 2000.

While Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. ``The honest truth is that we're lucky,'' said Senior Deputy Rick Godfrey. ``We are below what we should be at.''

Godfrey recalled one year when Thousand Oaks recorded 12 traffic- related deaths.

``The numbers have been coming down since the 1960s,'' Godfrey said. ``Cars are getting safer, the streets are getting safer . . . and safety is improving.''
