Oslo's airport opened in the autumn of 1998, at Gardermoen in the gently forested landscape of Akershus Akershus (ä`kərs-hs'), county (1995 pop. 434,544), 1,895 sq mi (4,908 sq km), SE Norway, bordering on the Oslofjord in the south and on Sweden in the east. The capital is Oslo.  county, about 45km to the north-east of the city. Its passenger terminal, designed by Aviaplan, a consortium of architects and engineers, is situated between two runways and consists of a large central concourse and two wings (east for international flights, west for domestic traffic) with three lateral lateral /lat·er·al/ (-il)
