It's chemical name is methylenedioxymethamphetamine - or MDMA MDMA 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine.

A tablet containing about 120mg of MDMA would be considered a sufficient dose of ecstasy.

Up to 500,000 people a week in Britain are thought to use it.

The drug is made illegally by back street chemists, usually outside Britain.

Most of the drug is smuggled into the country from Holland.

The drug used to cost pounds 20-25 a tablet - today it costs around pounds 8.
