 50-OFF STORES REPORTS INCREASED SALES
SAN ANTONIO, Texas, April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- San Antonio based

off-price apparel retailer 50-OFF Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: FOFF), continued its upward sales trend with the announcement today of its sales for the four-week period ended Friday, March 27, 1992. Sales increased 18 percent to $12.4 million from $10.5 million for the same period last year and exceeded projections.
As expected, the calendar shift of the Easter holiday from March 31 last year to April 19 this year resulted in lower March comparable store sales. Comparable store sales decreased 12 percent for the four-week period.
Charles Siegel, chairman, president and CEO of the company, stated, "Because Easter season sales are so significant, especially in our children's apparel department, the early Easter holiday last year dramatically boosted sales for March 1991. This resulted in a 34 percent increase in comparable store sales over March 1990, our highest monthly comparable store sales percentage increase during fiscal 1992. Although we continue to be very pleased with our sales performance and also with the sales performance of our new stores in new markets, last year's great Easter performance in March just proved impossible to match.
"By the same token," Siegel cautioned, "our April 1992 comparable sales performance should show substantial increases over April 1991, attributable in significant part to the later Easter sales period. Comparing comparable store sales for March 1990 (when Easter fell on April 15, which is approximately when Easter will fall this year) to March 1992 provides an alternative measure of sales performance which is not skewed by dissimilar Easter sales levels; such a comparison shows that 1992 comparable store sales increased 23 percent over comparable store sales in March 1990." Siegel further stated that the company expects sales results for the first quarter of the current fiscal year, which ends May 1, to continue to compare quite favorably with similar chains in the retail apparel industry.
The company currently operates 76 stores in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Tennessee and Louisiana.
