5-Year Oil and Gas Leasing Schedule Announced.


After a temporary suspension of regular oil and gas lease sales, the state recently unveiled a new five-year lease sale schedule including 16 area-wide lease sales through the year 2005.

"After some juggling with the lease sale schedule over the past couple of years due to uncertainties surrounding the BPARCO merger, we have settled down to a schedule that provides the predictability desired by the industry," said Gov. Tony Knowles

The proposed sales include five in Cook Inlet Cook Inlet

Inlet, Gulf of Alaska in the northern Pacific Ocean. Bounded by the Kenai Peninsula on the east, it extends northeast for 220 mi (350 km), narrowing from 80 to 9 mi (129 to 14 km). Anchorage is situated near its head.
, five in the Beaufort Sea Beaufort Sea (bō`fərt), part of the Arctic Ocean, N of Alaska and Canada, between Point Barrow, Alaska, and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The Mackenzie River flows into the sea, which is always covered with pack ice. , five on the North Slope North Slope, Alaska: see Alaska North Slope.  and one in the North Slope Foothills area. The Cook Inlet sales are scheduled for each May; the rest are scheduled for each October.

Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt announced he has deferred proposed oil and natural gas Lease Sale 176 in the Beaufort Sea. The sale was originally scheduled for early 2002. Areas under consideration for the sale are adjacent to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) covers 19,049,236 acres (79,318 km²) in northeastern Alaska, in the North Slope region. It was originally protected in 1960 by order of Fred A. Seaton, the Secretary of the Interior under U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower. .
