5-2 Bartoli knocking value to make it a grey day for Ai.

Byline: Adrian Humphries

AI SUGIYAMA Ai Sugiyama (Japanese: 杉山愛 Sugiyama Ai, born July 5, 1975, Yokohama, Japan) is a Japanese professional tennis player. She turned professional in 1992.  has had a good time of it recently, so much so that she is ranked 12th in the world, but the Japanese girl may have been overrated by the layers for her French Open curtain-raiser, writes Adrian Humphries.

Sugiyama starts her tilt at the clay crown against Marion Bartoli and considering their only previous clash, at Roland Garros Roland Garros may refer to:
  • Roland Garros (aviator), French aviator during World War I
  • Roland Garros (tennis), Grand Slam tennis tournament in Paris, France
  • Roland Garros Airport, the airport in the aviator's hometown, Saint-Denis
two years ago, went to three close sets (6-3 4-6 7-5) there looks plenty of reason to get with the French girl at 5-2.

Bartoli, ranked 72nd in the world, looked a rather frail thing in the first few years after she turned professional in 2000. But she has performed more strongly in the last 12 months and has a definite chance against Sugiyama, who would not count clay as her favourite surface.

Virginia Ruano Pascual Virginia Ruano Pascual (born September 21, 1973) is a Spanish professional female tennis player. She was born in Madrid, Spain.

She has won three career singles titles but that's not the area where she has been most successful.
is regarded as a natural clay-courter, having learned her trade on slow, sun-baked arenas in Spain. But she may have her work cut out against Melinda Czink because the Hungarian has shown herself to be a strong, versatile performer on various surfaces.

This match is best watched, however, as Ruano Pascual may still have room for improvement on clay.
