5 TEENS HURT IN GAS BLAST.

 exploded and demolished the house they were in.

The three girls and two boys were all taken to hospital where two of the girls were said to have suffered severe disfiguring burns to their faces.

Their conditions were said to be stable and not life threatening.

None of the other youngsters were seriously injured.

A police spokesman said the explosion in Belfast was believed to have been caused by the gas cylinder being handled by one of the injured teenagers.

The blast ripped through the two-up and two-down house, which was up for sale, at around 3pm.

Such was the extent of the blast the Woodstock Road between Hillsborough Drive and Ogilvie Street was closed to traffic for several hours following the explosion.

Around 40 firefighters and a specialist search team were sent to the scene to mount a rescue operation.

Alan Fulford of the Fire and Rescue Service said: "I can confirm it was a gas explosion and that the house was demolished."

Police said there were reports of at least one other casualty having been taken to hospital by a passing motorist.
