5 SEEK GLENDALE SCHOOL SEATS.

Byline: Lee Condon Daily News Staff Writer

Voters will decide who should occupy three of five seats on the Glendale school board as district schools grapple with overcrowding overcrowding

Board President Jeanne Bentley is the only incumbent running for re-election.

Jane Whitaker, who spent 16 years on the panel, decided not to run for a fifth term. Lynda Rocamora also opted against a second term, citing an orthopedic condition and her desire to devote time to Safe Haven 1. The April 1 balloting comes ahead of a June 3 election in which voters will consider a $186 million school bond. The money will help refurbish schools in a district that has swelled to 30,000 students.

``Our major challenge facing the district, almost to crisis proportions, is the increased and still growing student population which has been compounded by the governor's plan for class-size reduction,'' Bentley said.

``To meet this challenge we need to implement a plan using opinions, ideas, recommendations coming from the collective vision of all,'' she said.

Contenders for the remaining seats include teacher Louise Foote, attorney Dennis Rihn, Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Sambar has set himself apart from other district administrators by speaking out on a variety of issues, and he has frequently criticized top administration and school board members.

,'' Sambar said. ``I have the courage to speak out.''

At 57, he's decided to make a run for the board as he prepares to retire from his job at Crescenta Valley High.

``The district for the past 15 years has been run on the philosophy that everything is wonderful,'' Sambar said. ``We haven't dealt honestly with the reality of the growth.''

Crescenta Valley High was built as a junior high school for 800 students; it now serves 2,400. The overcrowding is the main challenge the district faces in trying to keep school safe, he said.

``The potential for danger is ever present when you have overcrowding,'' Sambar said.

Scheetz, 50, said his experience as a member of the city's Neighborhood Task Force led him to seek public office. He hopes to spur parental involvement in the schools.

``We need to find a way to do true community outreach. Parents need to be involved in the education of their children,'' Scheetz said.

With his daughter a freshman at Hoover High, Scheetz is very concerned about overcrowding.

``It creates an environment not conducive to teaching and learning,'' he said. ``It's kind of a herd mentality as opposed to a learning environment.''

Rihn worked as an elementary school teacher before pursuing a law career.

``I know what helps children learn,' said Rihn, 39. ``What sets me apart is the diverse background I bring. I think I will question the status quo [Latin, The existing state of things at any given date.] Status quo ante bellum means the state of things before the war. The status quo to be preserved by a preliminary injunction is the last actual, peaceable, uncontested status which preceded the pending controversy. .''

Foote, a teacher at Riverside Drive Elementary School in Sherman Oaks, has lived in Glendale for 35 years, and all four of her children graduated from Glendale High.
