Stangland was one of five law enforcement officials honored by the American Legion and the Woodland Hills Homeowners Organization, whose members wanted to say thanks for safeguarding their families.

``Without them, we wouldn't have a community,'' said Neil Baliber, finance officer for Post 826. ``They protect our property and save our lives.''

of the Year; Jose Acosta, California Highway Patrol Officer of the Year; and Sgt. William L. Hines, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy of the Year.

The recipients' supervisors recommended them for the honor.

LAPD Capt. Jim Cansler said he chose Stangland because he consistently beat the department average in arrests made and cases closed. Plus, Stangland is dedicated to working a lot of extra hours - at all times of the night - and always goes that extra mile, Cansler said.

A 2 a.m. armed robbery at Pizza Hut in Loehmann's Plaza pulled Stangland from warm sheets early Saturday. One suspect shot himself in the groin after stealing the money, so the other suspect drove him to the hospital. Stangland's investigation led him to the other suspect, who led him to two handguns he threw into a neighbor's yard.

The money was recovered, the weapons were found and the suspects have been arrested, Cansler said.

Stangland, a 50-year-old Thousand Oaks resident, said he had wanted to work in law enforcement since he was 5 years old - which, his wife Cathy said, is when he sported a plastic badge and toy gun holster.

And after all these years, she said, it's still a little jarring to wake up and see that he's not next to her. But then she listened to the answering machine message about the armed robbery and it all made sense.

``He walked in the door and I said, Would you like some bacon and eggs?''
