VAN NUYS - Police Chief William Bratton and four community leaders received the Armand Arabian Award Thursday for their efforts to improve the quality of life in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Named after retired California Supreme Court Justice Armand Arabian, the fifth annual public service award honors local leaders and activists for their dedication to the community and creativity in addressing problems.

``They show us what we ought to be doing. They are role models; we learn from them,'' Arabian said at a luncheon attended by 300 people.

Sponsored by the Encino Chamber of Commerce, the Daily News and other groups, the awards were given to:

--Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton, a champion of community policing.

She cleaned houses to support him and help give him the time to start up a political club and a Christian club at Sylmar High.

Canales says he wants to become involved in politics so that he can eventually help bridge the Latino community with local politics. Gelb says Canales, like future recipients, will ensure that the younger generation will continue on with others work.
