The DGA's nominees ``for outstanding directorial achievement in feature films'' are closely watched in Hollywood, because only four times since 1949 has the winner not gone on to win the best director Oscar.

Anthony Minghella (``The English Patient'') and Joel Coen (``Fargo'') will compete with Cameron Crowe (``Jerry Maguire''), Mike Leigh (``Secrets & Lies'') and Scott Hicks (``Shine'').

It is the first DGA DGA Directors Guild of America (movie directors union)
DGA Délégation Générale pour l'Armement (France)
DGA Directeur-Grootaandeelhouder (Dutch: Managing Director and Major Shareholder) 
 nomination for all five directors.

Left out of the DGA list was Milos Miloš, prince of Serbia
Miloš or Milosh (Miloš Obrenović) (both: mĭ`lôsh ōbrĕ`nəvĭch) 
 Forman, who won the best director Golden Globe Award Sunday night from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for ``The People vs. Larry Flynt.''

Another Golden Globe nominee passed over by the DGA was ``Evita'' director Alan Parker.

Of the five movies directed by the DGA nominees, only ``Jerry Maguire'' was a big studio project.
