``We are very pleased that CalArts is part of the process of getting funding, time and opportunity into the hands of these gifted artists,'' CalArts President Steven D. Lavine said. ``We look forward to welcoming all five to our campus for the residency portion of the fellowships.''

Building on an ongoing collaboration with the Ucross Foundation, the Alpert Award will offer three pilot programs to help it recognize a larger number of award nominees. Each artist chosen for a residency prize will be awarded a one-month stay at CalArts in Valencia.

Established in 1994, the Alpert Award in the Arts provides five $50,000 fellowships each year to ``early midcareer'' artists in the fields of dance, film/video, music, theater and visual arts - five of the six disciplines taught at CalArts. Each fellowship includes a weeklong residency at CalArts.

The award is funded by the Herb Alpert Foundation and administered by CalArts on behalf of the foundation.

Ten judges choose two people in each discipline for a total of 100 nominations, 20 in each area. Then five independent three-person review panels each select one recipient.

``Panelists are charged with identifying a risk-taking, early midcareer artist, one who is moving work forward, and compels their curiosity,'' said Irene Borger, director of awards program. ``The 2005 recipients' work differs greatly in terms of arena of investigation and temperament; what Jem, David, Harrell, Naomi and Donna share is imaginative independence, fierce commitment and the gift for asking deep questions.''

Fifty-five artists have received the Alpert Award since the fellowship's inception. Past winners include playwright Susan-Lori Parks, choreographers Rennie Harris and John Kelly, the film, video and performance collective RTMark, composer-performers Miya Masaoka, Anne Le Baron and Steve Coleman, visual artists Carrie Mae Weems Carrie Mae Weems (born 1953) is an award winning photographer.
