``Basically it was a joint task force,'' he said. ``They did field compliance checks of about 180 registered sex offenders in the West Valley area. That's just one division. It's an ongoing effort by (the) LAPD to ensure compliance with the sexual offender registration requirements.''

The LAPD's West Valley Division includes Woodland Hills, parts of West Hills, Canoga Park, Winnetka, Reseda, Tarzana and Encino.

A total of 145 contacts were made. Those not at their residences could be subject to arrest for failure to comply with the sex registration law, as detectives said additional arrests are expected, Partain said.

``The law requires that they be home at certain times per their probation,'' he added. ``It could be at the time this sweep was conducted, they were supposed to be home at the time and weren't.''

No additional information was given on the five arrests for outstanding warrants.
