5,000 CALL FOR CHARITY : JEWISH GROUP HOLDS FUND-RAISING DRIVE.

 phone-athon - an effort to raise $4 million to $5 million in pledges for the United Jewish Fund in Los Angeles.

Organizers said the event represented the largest single day of fund raising for UJF UJF Université Joseph Fourier (France) , a fund-raising arm of the Jewish Federation A Jewish Federation is a confederation of various Jewish social agencies, volunteer programs, educational bodies, and related organizations, found within most cities in North America that host a viable Jewish community. .

``It makes me feel wonderful. We're doing a good deed,'' said Ethel Sandler, 84, of Woodland Hills, one of the fund-raisers in the West San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

A number of survivors of the Holocaust were joined by members of their families making calls to support rescue and relief efforts.

Mayor Richard Riordan also joined in, making five telephone calls from the West Valley Jewish Community Center in West Hills Sunday morning. One person he contacted pledged $30,000 officials said.

``It made me feel very good (to see Riordan at Super Sunday),'' said longtime Valley center member Fay Chalupowitz, who has been volunteering for the event for the past 17 years.

The goal of the San Fernando Valley Alliance of the Jewish Federation was to raise $1.2 million.

Officials said the money will be used by a variety of agencies to provide a ``safety net'' for those in need on a nonsectarian basis.

Included in the affair was the second annual ``Mitzvathon'' festival for children.

Taken from the word ``mitzvah,'' meaning good deeds, the Mitzvathon included a variety of activities such as making get-well cards for children in hospitals, making caps for children with cancer, and learning sign language, as well as decorating food bags for a bimonthly bi·month·ly
