4X4 PLOUGHS INTO PICNIC PENSIONERS AT THE RACES; Three badly hurt as Goodwood vet reverses into them.

THREE elderly race-goers were seriously injured yesterday when a runaway 4x4 hit them as they picnicked in a car park.

The Jeep Cherokee Jeep Cherokee can refer to five different SUV models produced by Jeep from 1974 to the present:
  • Jeep Cherokee (SJ), a full-size SUV produced 1974–1983
  • Jeep Cherokee (XJ), a compact SUV produced 1984–2001

The victims, two of them women, were taken to hospital after the Jeep reversed through a fence, plunged down an embankment, wrecked another fence and hit three cars before smashing into the group.

A witness said: "It's a miracle no one was killed.

"The family were enjoying a picnic in the sun and were struck as they tried to jump out of the way. It's a good job there were no children there."

Goodwood boss Rod Fabricius said: "An official vehicle driven by our vet Andy Duncan Andy Duncan is the name of:

 was being parked in its normal position on the inside of the track when it accelerated backwards.

"It went through a rail and down a bank into car park 2, where it rammed into other vehicles which were already parked but still occupied.

"I believe racegoers in the parked cars and passengers in Andy's car were injured. They have been taken to hospital."

The drama happened as thousands enjoyed a family-themebank holiday raceday at the West Sussex course.

Goodwood's own doctors, St John Ambulance staff and an air ambulance air ambulance Emergency medicine A helicopter or, less commonly, a fixed wing aircraft, used to evacuate a person who requires immediate medical attention that cannot be provided at his/her current location  raced to the scene just after midday.

Sussex Police said: "Five people were taken to hospital in Chichester with suspected broken bones.

"None of the injuries is thought to be life-threatening.

"No one has been arrested, though we expect to speak to the driver in due course."
