Japan's key Nikkei stock index went into yet another free fall Monday, briefly plummeting 6 percent to the 7,100 level in a sign the stock bellwether may be heading for a lowest finish in 26 years.

The Nikkei fell to the 7,500 level at the outset of trading, sinking below 7,607.88 -- its lowest close since Nov. 9, 1982 -- logged in April 2003. Only closing levels are available for the Nikkei for the period before late 1985.
