The holiday season is in full swing and with that comes the frenetic hustle and bustle for cooks and shoppers alike.

With that in mind, we're sharing again this year a roundup of discoveries - interesting places where you can find food ingredients for making gifts, filling baskets or cooking up party or potluck fare, and festive food-related gifts for most everyone on your list.

Even if your holiday list is small and you don't have much cooking or shopping to do, no doubt you'll find these haunts will get you into the spirit of the season. And while you're out and about, you might enjoy stopping in at the new Promenade in Westlake Village and having lunch at Marmalade Cafe or Rosti or popping into the new Bristol Farms Bristol Farms is a grocery store chain that markets itself as being "upscale", with thirteen stores located mainly in the Southern California market. Formerly a subsidiary of Albertsons, Bristol Farms is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Supervalu, Inc.  market.

This shop stocks a limited selection of imported Dutch foods as well as chocolates, cookies, baked goods and other items from Holland. They also have Indonesian spices and spice paste mixes, which the Dutch love, as well as Delft Delft (dĕlft), city (1994 pop. 91,941), South Holland prov., W Netherlands. This specialty bakery with a sit-down casual restaurant buzzes with patrons for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A limited selection of pastries, croissants and breads are available at a takeout counter. Those we sampled were excellent - a custard roll, chocolate croissant and baguette - but rather expensive. If you're having a holiday party, call ahead and order a fancy cake or individual pastries. Splurge!

When it's party time, this is a place we rely on for colorful and coordinated napkins and plates in a variety of sizes, plastic utensils and table decorations of all sorts. They stock balloons, helium, wrapping papers and ribbons of all colors and varieties, guest books, wedding books and all sorts of party items, including invitations at reasonable prices. You'll find a host of holiday party items here.

This small dessert shop in an out-of-the-way location (watch carefully or you might miss it) offers a limited selection of goodies, but all are fabulous tasting - and a cut above much of the competition. Among the signature creations of owner Mary Aqleh are Lemon Clouds (almond meringues sandwiched together with lemon buttercream), Espresso Clouds, Orange Clouds, Chocolate Truffle truffle (trŭf`əl) [Fr.], subterranean edible fungus that forms a mutually beneficial (symbiotic) relationship with the roots of certain trees and plants. The part of the fungus used as food is the ascoma, the fruiting body of the fungus.  Cake and Sarah Berhardts (almond meringues with chocolate mousse dipped in bittersweet bittersweet, name for two unrelated plants, belonging to different families, both fall-fruiting woody vines sometimes cultivated for their decorative scarlet berries.  chocolate). Often the equipment and gadgets have been designed to withstand the rigors of a restaurant kitchen so they'll last longer than their conventional kitchen counterparts. Look for good prices on baking racks, pastry bags, pastry tips, plastic serving bowls, plastic scrapers, knives and much more.

Dotted throughout the Southland, these nonmembership restaurant supply stores offer large containers of spices and other bulk foods at good prices. The stores' stock is different from the club warehouses, with a greater selection of baking and other restaurant-type ingredients available. You'll also find inexpensive plastic tablecloths in assorted colors, plus plastic serving trays and disposable foil serving pans. If you're having a party, take a look in their refrigerator and freezer sections for appetizer and main-course selections, which friends tell us are good for entertaining with ease.

The garden shops offer poinsettias and fresh-cut and living Christmas trees at good prices.

When putting together a holiday party, this is the place to shop for cheeses, specialty breads, crackers, dips and spreads, olives, pickles, mustards, oils, vinegars, desserts, biscotti Biscotti (plural of Italian biscotto, roughly meaning "twice baked") are crisp Italian cookies often containing nuts or flavored with anise. Traditionally, biscotti are made by baking cookie dough in two long slabs, cutting these into slices, and reheating them to dry , candies, wine, liquor and other gourmet food items at hard-to-beat prices. Don't miss the sun-dried tomato bread or the chocolate cherry bread, which they recently started carrying.

The new, spacious Beverly Hills location offers a larger selection of gourmet food items, cookbooks, place settings of dishes and serving pieces and gadgets than other smaller stores around the area. Purchase a can of their mulling spices ($8.50 each) and heat with apple cider for a warm and welcoming holiday drink. The days we visited two different locations, you could sample the brew as you shopped.

This small shop, now located in the new Promenade shopping center, is decked out for the holidays with ornaments, gifts and home accessories that would make interesting gifts.
