4D, Inc., publishers of the 4th Dimension RAD/RDBMS Environment and 4D WebSTAR Server Suite, today announced the successful use of 4D for organizing the prestigious 2002 American Film Institute American Film Institute (AFI), nonprofit organization established in Washington, D.C., in 1967 by the National Endowment for the Arts to preserve and catalog American films and television, to provide work grants for new and established filmmakers, and to increase  (AFI) Life Achievement Award ceremony. AFI's 4D-based solution for managing guest invitations, seating and layout represents the first time logistics planning and reporting were managed in-house at AFI and determined pivotal to increased control at a lower cost.

4D provided AFI with control over its own data with versatility and ease of use, and proved indispensable to the success of many AFI special events, including the 2002 AFI Life Achievement Award. Prior to using 4D, the planning and reporting of such large events were out-sourced. Now, AFI uses 4D to keep track of guests and seating, and to generate reports. The Special Events module in the solution even gave AFI control over the theatre's entire layout so, in the planning stages, guests could be moved around with a simple drag-and-drop.

"4D's power and flexibility makes it easy to develop and deploy complex custom solutions such as the AFI event management system," explained Brendan Coveney, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of 4D, Inc. "We're delighted the AFI has successfully used 4D to manage so much of its organization's logistics, from donor and fund-raising activities to award ceremonies. 4D's ability to manage the logistics of a ceremony as renowned and complex as the 2002 AFI Life Achievement Awards is not only an honor, but a testament to the scope of possibilities which lie within 4D as a professional tool for creating truly powerful solutions."

Evaluation of the 4D solution's success follows the world-renowned AFI Life Achievement Award, honoring Tom Hanks, which took place on June 12, 2002 at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre The Kodak Theatre is a live theatre in the Hollywood and Highland retail, dining, and entertainment complex on Hollywood Boulevard and North Highland Avenue in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles.  and was later televised on the USA Network. Familiar with using 4D as a data management tool for six years, AFI expanded its use of 4D to create a powerful system for organizing the logistics of crucial special events including the Life Achievement Award and a host of other events. AFI's 4D program was developed by Michael Leigh Michael Leigh is an artist, based in Cheshire, England and working mainly in the area of mail art.
