It was mentioned to Max Tremblay, a left-handed reliever in the Long Beach State bullpen, that the 49ers are in something of a bind in the College World Series: 0-1 and facing third-seeded Florida State this evening in an elimination game. Tremblay didn't say so directly, but his stern, no-nonsense look certainly did . . . something like, ``You call this a bind? Get outta here.'' At which point Tremblay detailed a scrape he endured just five months ago, a real-life drama that pains him to this day, emotionally and physically. It was on New Year's Eve, and Tremblay was driving alone on a mountain road in the Mt. He said the feeling was one of free fall. It was just the beginning of what to become a lengthy ordeal. ``No one heard me go over the side,'' Tremblay said. ``No one saw me. ``I climbed up the cliff. Then I walked three miles, and on an ankle, my left one, that still bothers me even now. That was my only injury. It was all torn up. The doctors told me I'd have been better off if I'd broken it. ``And the cops, they told me later there was no way I was even alive.'' ``I called and tried to report the incident,'' Tremblay said. ``I called three different police departments. ``I learned later that a police helicopter had spotted the car. Finding no one in it, they got up a 60-man search party. ``Then, later in the day, once they'd traced (the car) to me, at least 10 or 12 police officers showed up at my door. They just wanted to see me - after seeing the car, I guess, they couldn't believe I was even alive.'' Alive, but obviously shaken. ``It stuck in my head a long time, remembering how far I fell. Asked how he's enjoying his senior year, Tremblay replied with a smile, ``How could I not enjoy it?'' There are no statistical rewards for such performances. No wins, no saves, just ``stops,'' which don't show up in the scorebook. Which is why, in two seasons and 25 games as a 49er, Tremblay has yet to post a win, or a save. Yet, on a rural mountain road not too long ago, Max Tremblay got one of each. LONG BEACH ST. vs. FLORIDA ST. 4:30 p.m., ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network 2 |
