43 students receive accounting scholarship from National Society of Public Accountants Scholarship Foundation.


Forty-three college accounting students have been awarded scholarships by the National Society of Accountants (NSA) Scholarship Foundation for the 1999-2000 academic school year. More than 1,400 students applied for the 1999-2000 awards. Applicants were judged on scholastic achievement, demonstrated leadership ability and financial need.

See Board of directors.  awarded 16 scholarships in the amount of $500 each to students entering their second year of study, 26 scholarships in the amount of $1000 each to students entering their third or fourth year of study, and 1 renewable $2000 scholarship.

"There is a continuing and vital need to encourage students who are interested in entering our profession. NSA believes in helping people who wish to achieve their goals through education, said Donald L. Cordano, Chair of the NSA Scholarship Foundation.

Pamela Karr of Gainesville, Florida, was selected as the most outstanding student in the competition, earning special designation as the Charles H. Earp Memorial Scholar. Karr will be completing her second year of study at the University of Florida University of Florida is the third-largest university in the United States, with 50,912 students (as of Fall 2006) and has the eighth-largest budget (nearly $1.9 billion per year). UF is home to 16 colleges and more than 150 research centers and institutes.  during the 1999-2000 academic year. In addition to her scholarship award, she will receive an additional $200 and a special plaque.

The Board of Trustees selected Gary Manowitz of Westbury, New York Westbury is a village in Nassau County, New York in the United States. The population was 14,263 at the 2000 census.

The Village of Westbury is in the Town of North Hempstead.
, as the 1999 recipient of the Stanley H. Stearman Scholarship Award. This award was established in 1987 in recognition of 25 years of dedicated service by retired NSA Executive Vice President Stanley H. Stearman. Candidates for this prestigious award must be the spouse, son, daughter, grandchild, niece, nephew, son- or daughter-in-law of an NSA Active, Retired or deceased Active/Retired member. Manowitz is the grandson of NSA member Robert Manowitz of Westbury, New York. He will receive a $2000 scholarship annually for a maximum of three years while pursuing accounting studies. Manowitz is a student at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

The Board of Trustees also selected Rebecca Soto of Oakton, Virginia, as the 1999 recipient of the Louis and Fannie Sager Memorial Scholarship Award. This award was established in 1991 to honor retired NSA Legal Counsel, William H. Sager, the youngest son of Louis and Fannie Sager, on his tenth anniversary of service to NSA. Candidates for this award must have graduated from a Virginia public high school and be enrolled as an undergraduate at a Virginia college or university majoring in accounting. Soto will be completing her senior year at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, at Blacksburg; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered and opened 1872 as an agricultural and mechanical college.  during the 1999-2000 academic year.

The Scholarship Fund is the result of many generous contributions from individuals, businesses, and organizations. A number of scholarships are awarded in honor or memory of these benefactors.

Matthew Billings, 4th year Pueblo, CO Colorado State University Colorado State University, at Fort Collins; land-grant with state and federal support; chartered 1870, opened 1879 as an agricultural college, assumed present name in 1957. There is a veterinary teaching hospital, an agricultural campus, and a research campus.

Jennifer Davenport, 2nd year Marion, TX Texas Lutheran University Founded in 1891 in Brenham, Texas as an academy of the First German Evangelical Lutheran Synod in Texas[1], the school moved to Seguin, Texas in 1912. After merging with Trinity College of Round Rock, Texas and Clifton College, the school was renamed Texas Lutheran College in  (Davenport's scholarship in honor of Stephen E. Jennifer Desideri, 4th year Groton, CT University of Connecticut The University of Connecticut is the State of Connecticut's land-grant university. It was founded in 1881 and serves more than 27,000 students on its six campuses, including more than 9,000 graduate students in multiple programs.

The NSA Scholarship Foundation was formed in 1969 to encourage and assist high caliber students pursuing accounting studies. The Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization which relies solely on voluntary contributions to fund scholarship awards. Those interested in making a tax-deductible contribution are encouraged to contact the Foundation Office at 800-966-6679, Ext. 1312. Applications for the 2000-2001 academic year will be available October 1, 1999. Interested students should visit the NSA website at www.nsacct.org, or contact the Foundation Office after October 1, 1999 to receive application material.
