On December 17, 1996 members of the Peruvian guerilla group, the Tupack Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA Noun 1. MRTA - a Marxist-Leninist terrorist organization in Peru; was formed in 1983 to overthrow the Peruvian government and replace it with a Marxist regime; has connections with the ELN in Bolivia ), attacked the residence of the Japanese ambassador to Peru during his birthday party, taking hostage hundreds of guests, including Louis Giampetri, a former field commander of special operations forces Those Active and Reserve Component forces of the Military Services designated by the Secretary of Defense and specifically organized, trained, and equipped to conduct and support special operations. Also called SOF.  that had fought the MRTA. From within the residence, Giampetri played a role in the eventual resolution of the crisis by using his pager to help state commandos locate the guerillas inside the residence.
