4 RUNNING FOR 3 SEATS ON GLENDALE COLLEGE DISTRICT BOARD.

GLENDALE - Three incumbents and one challenger are running for three seats on the Glendale Community College Glendale Community College can refer to one of two colleges in the United States.

 District Board of Trustees board of trustees Politics The posse of thugs who oversee an institution's administration. See Board of directors.  in the April 5 election.

The candidates say they want to involve the community more in college affairs as well as make sure the college remains fiscally sound during tight budgets years ahead.

The college is looking at building a new parking lot, expanding Mountain Street and finding a new president in the coming years.

The following are brief profiles of the candidates and what they would like to do as college board members:

Anita Gabrielian

Age: 46

Birthplace: Diriamba, Nicaragua

Marital Status: Married

Children: three

Education: University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission ; California State Polytechnic University, Pomona History
W.K. Kellogg develops Arabian horse ranch
W.K. Kellogg, known for his famous Corn Flakes, had a life long passion for Arabian horses. After purchasing 377 acres at a cost of $25,000 USD, Kellogg developed the land into a world-renowned Arabian horse ranch.
 

Career: Executive at SBC Communications Inc.; member of the GCC board since appointed in 2002, elected to a two-year term in 2003

Top Issues: Continuing stable and experienced leadership at the college; finding a good candidate to be the new college president; getting a fair share of federal and state funding; making sure construction and modernization funds are spent efficiently

Armine Hacopian

Age: 56

Birthplace: Tehran, Iran

Marital Status: Married

Children: two

Education: California State University, Los Angeles California State University, Los Angeles (also known as Cal State L.A., CSULA, or "'CSLA"') is a public university, part of the California State University system. ; University of La Verne The University of La Verne is a private university in La Verne, California (about 35 miles east of Los Angeles) with a main campus, seven satellite campuses throughout central and southern California, a law school, and two military regional campuses at Point Mugu Naval Air Station  

Career: Retired educator; consultant in organizational management; member of the GCC board since elected in 2001

Top Issues: Ensuring conservative expenditure of construction and modernization funds; seeing through the construction of a new 835-space parking lot; working with Sacramento to lower the cost of tuition; working with other colleges to lower the costs of textbooks

Victor King

Age: 40

Birthplace: Hong Kong

Marital Status: Married

Children: None

Education: University of Chicago; University of Michigan Law School The University of Michigan Law School, located in Ann Arbor, is a unit of the University of Michigan. The Law School, founded in 1859, currently has an enrollment of approximately 1,200 students, most of whom are earning the degrees of Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Master of Laws (LLM).  

Career: Head attorney at California State University, Los Angeles; member of the GCC board since elected in 1997

Top Issues: Keeping the college fiscally sound; expanding the Garfield Campus; finding a good new college president who will know how to apply technology to education; maintaining the college's commitment to education in English as a second language

Linda Sheffield

Age: 52

Birthplace: Montana

Marital Status: Married

Children: four

Education: Brigham Young University Brigham Young University, at Provo, Utah; Latter-Day Saints; coeducational; opened as an academy in 1875 and became a university in 1903. It is noted for its law and business schools.  

Career: Medical receptionist

Top Issues: Involving the community more in the management of the college; requiring the college board to take more community input.
