Byline: Heather MacDonald Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Four new car dealerships, possibly including Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti, will set up shop on Valencia's Auto Row.

on Tuesday unanimously approved The Newhall Land and Farming Company's expansion plans, which will take the dealership zone east along Valencia Boulevard from Creekside Road, in front of the popular William S. Hart PONY League The Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York League, also known as the PONY League, was a Class D minor league baseball circuit that played from 1939 through 1956. The forerunner of the modern Class A New York - Penn League, the PONY served as the first professional baseball address of  Baseball and Softball Complex.

``The development makes perfect sense for the community,'' said Marlee Lauffer, spokeswoman for Newhall Land, which developed Auto Row.

With 17 dealerships now, Auto Row is a significant contributor to the city of Santa Clarita's budget, which is dependent on a share of locally generated sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  revenue.

The auto dealers generate 23 percent of Santa Clarita's sales tax receipts, which make up a majority of the city's general fund that is used to pay for projects from road resurfacing to new park construction.

With the city nearly built out and developer fees declining, Santa Clarita is looking more toward sales tax revenue to build roads, establish parks and finance other public projects.

``We want these dealers in the city, and located near Auto Row, and this site does this,'' said Mike Haviland, the city's economic development manager.

Under the proposal, Cinema Drive will be extended across Valencia Boulevard and provide easier and safer access to the PONY League complex. The youth ballfields will remain behind the new dealerships at Valencia Boulevard and Cinema Drive.

Newhall Land, the area's largest developer, owns the entire 53-acre site along Valencia Boulevard and plans to give about 17 acres to the 2,900- player PONY League, according to according to

Most of the concerns about the project involved Newhall Land's request to use 460,000 cubic yards of dirt left over from the construction of developer Larry Rasmussen's Centre Pointe Business Park to level off the property, which is much lower than Valencia Boulevard.

An additional 94,000 cubic yards of dirt will be taken to another Newhall Land development site at Tourney Road on Magic Mountain Parkway.
