The endorsements were viewed as significant and precedent-setting because of the number of council members coming out against a colleague and because the charge against Holden was led by the council's two other African-American members, Walters and Ridley-Thomas. ``In politics, you make friends and you make enemies,'' Holden said. ``I guess they don't like me being an independent voice on the council. ``And, I don't think these endorsements will help. People don't like someone coming in from outside to tell them how to vote.'' Holden, 69, long has been the subject of criticism among council members for the number of items he calls off the agenda for special debate as well as for going against the majority on what many consider routine issues in order to get more attention. ``Everything I do is for the betterment bet·ter·ment n. 1. Ridley-Thomas said he believes Holden does not serve the interests of the city. ``If he was holding up business for productive matters, that would be one thing,'' Ridley-Thomas said. ``But all he does is disrupt city business and doesn't allow us to engage in constructive dialogue.'' Shockley came in a distant second to Holden in the April 13 election, but he said it was significant in that he forced the incumbent into a runoff. ``A majority of people in this district said they wanted to see a change,'' Shockley said. ``I believe I am the candidate to bring that change.'' |
