The lining of these gowns couldn't be anything but silver.

Days after a truck and $3 million worth of wedding dresses bound for L.A. were stolen from a breast cancer charity, designers and individuals have responded by donating more than 4,000 dresses -- more than double the number stolen.

``The response has just been outstanding. We are almost in a better position than where we were before,'' said Suzanne Appel, local chairwoman of Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation's Brides Against Breast Cancer. ``So many people have taken our cause into their heart, and it is overwhelming what it means for us over the next few years.''

Appel anticipates the Oregon-based charity will be more warmly received at each of its 36 scheduled bridal sales across the nation in 2007.

``It is a pure, pure charity. They ask nothing in return,'' said Shari Kahane, 53, of West Hills.

In 2003, Kahane began to lose a 10-year battle with breast cancer, which had spread to her lungs and liver. Her teenage sons were depressed, and Kahane desperately hoped to lift their spirits.

Making Memories achieved that with a 15-minute meeting with Microsoft founder Bill Gates (person) Bill Gates - William Henry Gates III, Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, which he co-founded in 1975 with Paul Allen. Kahane wasn't surprised to hear people had pitched in to ensure Making Memories wouldn't have to cancel this weekend's bridal sale.

``Once people hear about what this charity does, everybody wants to help,'' she said.

``It was going to a beautiful cause. That is what life is all about,'' the Calabasas resident said. ``You have an obligation to help people out.''
