met Armstrong & Associates predictions and were similar to 1998.

"The warehouse based integrated services segment showed improvement over 1998," according to Richard Armstrong Richard Armstrong can refer to one of the following:
  • Richard Armstrong (author), winner of the 1948 Carnegie medal for children's literature
  • Sir Richard Armstrong (conductor)
  • Sir Richard Armstrong (officer), a British army officer
, president of Armstrong & Associates. "There are signs of profitability improvement in this segment. Margins are firming up in the 6-8% area."

Armstrong estimates that total revenues for U.S. based 3PL's were $46 billion in 1999. Overall, net profitability was 5%. Net 3PL revenues were $25 billion.

Armstrong expects overall growth to continue in the 15-20% range for 3-4 more years. "There are still significant opportunities with companies of all sizes. Many Fortune 500 companies have not outsourced transportation, warehouse and inventory management functions that are not parts of their core competencies A core competency is something that a firm can do well and that meets the following three conditions specified by Hamel and Prahalad (1990):
  1. It provides customer benefits
  2. It is hard for competitors to imitate
  3. It can be leveraged widely to many products and markets.
. In addition, many small to midsize companies are the right size to have their integrated supply chains managed by a single, contract logistics company," Armstrong said. "E-commerce fulfillment will add new possibilities and revenue for many traditional 3PL's. Merger and acquisition activities will continue to change many company profiles. The MSAS/Mark VII, Caliber/Fed Ex and Rollins/UPS deals are a part of an ongoing trend."

Armstrong's estimates are based on an in-depth analysis of 38 industry leaders who account for more than one-half of U.S. revenues. The information is gathered for publication of "Who's Who Who’s Who
