IN his novel 1984, George Orwell imagined a totalitarian regime in which the downtrodden masses went about their business beneath large posters of their feared overlord.

Now, here's a picture of Wayne Rooney relaxing - as best he can - at Manchester United's training ground while the Dear Leader looks on benevolently.

Only 21 years late, George.

PS: That shot is from a new DVD on Rooney's first 12 months at Old Trafford which is notable for two magic moments.

First, Roy Keane warming up for his MUTV interview with this hardly gushing praise for Rooney's European debut against Fenerbahce: "It was a great start but he hasn't scored a hat-trick since."

And second, Rooney's response when asked if his first year at the Biggest Club In The Universe had been everything he dreamed of.

"Yes," he replies. "But without the trophies."
