Byline: Bhavna Mistry Daily News Staff Writer

If you're still on the fence with Election Day quickly approaching, the third-graders of Debbie Jimenez's class might be able to help.

For a month now, Jimenez's class at Newhall Elementary School elementary school: see school.  has been learning about the election process and studying the presidential candidates and the issues. By Wednesday morning the children were confident with their stands as they voted 16-11 in favor of upon the side of; favorable to; for the advantage of.

``I'm voting for Clinton because he's put more police on the streets,'' said Mason Feldman, 8. ``He's tough on crime and supports the `three-strikes' law.''

Eight-year-old Jimmy Wood said he was voting for Bob Dole dole, distribution to the poor, usually of food or money. In medieval times doles were usually from bequests of money or land, and the income was given to charity or distributed to the local poor at funerals.  because Dole was lowering taxes, had fought for his country and is aiming to balance the budget by 2002.

``We wanted them to make an educated choice,'' Jimenez said. ``We wanted them to know who they were voting for and know the reasons why.''

This is the first year that Jimenez decided to make the lesson a more interactive long term project and was happy with the results.

``I wanted something that they and their parents can really get involved with that was an important current issue,'' she said. ``I'm surprised at how much they really understood.''

McKeon and Democratic challenger Diane Trautman stopped by to observe the third-grade session.

``When I was in third grade, I don't think we did this,'' McKeon said. ``We need to do a lot more of this - start kids at a young age.''

``I wish more of the schools were doing this,'' Trautman said. ``The kids did a good job. You can tell they've invested something.''
