The Points of Light Foundation has recognized 3M and five other companies for their contributions and commitment to developing effective volunteer programs. Former President George H. Bush will present the award at the Marriott Marquis in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

Some of the employees attending tomorrow's event are:

Bob Barton -- As the co-founder of 3M's Visiting Wizards program, Bob brings science to the classroom in a fun and exciting way. 3M Visiting Wizards bring hands-on demonstrations to children. 3M Visiting Wizards are trained to demonstrate scientific principles related to a variety of topics -- from papermaking to exploring water properties. Since the program's beginning in 1985, nearly half a million children and their teachers have been inspired and educated through the Visiting Wizards program.

Barbara Peterson -- Barbara, a 2001 3M Community Volunteer Award recipient, was recognized for her contributions to Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity, nonprofit ecumenical Christian organization that enables low-income people to own affordable, livable housing. Headquartered in Americus, Ga., it was founded in 1976 by businessman Millard Fuller and his wife. . In addition to Habitat for Humanity, she also is chair of 3M's longest running science encouragement program, 3M Science Training Encouragement Program (3M STEP). Through STEP, 3M scientists mentor 35 students from the Saint Paul Public Schools Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) is a school district that covers all of the city of Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Saint Paul supports a robust network of publicly-funded primary and secondary schools.
 and during the summer the company provides employment for the students. 3M STEP has served as a stepping-stone for more than 700 high school students -- many of whom have gone to college and are employed by technical companies around the nation, including 3M.

Bert Bridger -- As a member of the MATHCOUNTS Foundation National Board of Directors, Bert leads 3M's involvement in this national program designed to spark enthusiasm and an enjoyment of mathematics among middle school students. Each year dozens of 3M employees and retirees support the MATHCOUNTS program.
